Effect of ipratropium bromide on mucociliary clearance and pulmonary function in reversible airways obstruction.

The effects of (a) regular use for one week and (b) a single dose of a synthetic anticholinergic (ipratropium bromide) on lung mucociliary clearance and as a bronchodilator was ascertained in a controlled, double-blind, cross-over study in 12 patients with reversible airways obstruction (mean increase in FEV after isoprenaline: 17% range 10-50%). Two puffs from a metered dose inhaler of either ...

Ipratropium bromide and airways function in wheezy infants.

The airway response to nebulised ipratropium bromide was studied in 17 chronically or recurrently wheezy infants aged 4-15 months. The peripheral airway response was assessed by the change in maximum flow at functional residual capacity (Vmax FRC) and the upper and central airway response by the change in specific airways resistance. The significant reduction in specific airways resistance afte...

Effect of inhalation of salbutamol, beclomethasone dipropionate & ipratropium bromide on mucociliary clearance in some patients with chronic stable bronchial asthma.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Asthma is now regarded as an inflammatory disease and bronchial inflammation may disrupt mucociliary function. Inhaled drugs may act by improving mucociliary function. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of salbutamol, ipratropium bromide and beclomethasone on mucociliary clearance in patients with chronic stable asthma and to compare the efficacy of these...

Bladder outflow obstruction induced by ipratropium bromide.

Three cases are described in which bladder outflow obstruction was produced by ipratropium bromide, a widely used anticholinergic bronchodilator which has been regarded as virtually free from systemic side effects. Many patients treated with ipratropium bromide are elderly males in whom prostatic hypertrophy is common and in these circumstances, large doses should be used with caution.
